Meet awards announced for 2011 Pacific meets -- new! Follow this link for a list of the meet hosts for 2011 major meets in Pacific awarded in the first round of bidding.

The second round of bidding is now open for Pacific's 2011 major meets. Meets still available are highlighted in yellow in the list of awarded meets above. Clubs interested in hosting one of these meets should follow this link to the 2011 bid application instructions.

The deadline for applications for the second round of bidding is Sunday, August 22, at 8 p.m.

Zone 1 South to hold beginner stroke and turn clinic -- new! Zone 1 South and Seaside Aquatics will be hosting a beginner stroke and turn clinic on Tuesday, August 3, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m., at Seaside High School, 2200 Noche Buena St., Seaside. Once at the school, follow signs to the classroom. Registration for the clinic begins at 5:40 p.m.

Fifteen records set in July so far -- new! We have 15 new Pacific age group records (13 individual, two relay) to report from the first two meet weekends of July. Leading the pack of July record-setters are MSJA's Jerome Sun, who took down four 11-12 boys records at Junior Olympics, and the Terrapins' Chelsea Chenault, who set three 15-16 girls freestyle records at the Los Angeles Grand Prix.

Application available for 2009-10 Scholastic All-America Team -- new! USA Swimming's Scholastic All-America Team is made up of high school student-athletes who have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and who have achieved the required time standard in one or more events. Follow this link for an application form to apply for the 2009-10 team. Application deadline is August 1.
Motion introduced re no-show rules -- new! A motion was introduced at the June Board of Directors meeting to outline and clarify the no-show rules in effect at various levels of meets within Pacific. It will be voted on at the next board meeting, which is August 25. Follow this link for a copy of the motion.

Coach/club grant program now available -- new! Pacific is now offering a Club Development/Coaches Education Grant Program. The purpose of the program is to offer support for currently chartered clubs to provide and enhance educational opportunities for their coaches and the clubs. USA Swimming announces child protection safeguards, action plan -- In the wake of recent media coverage, USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus has sent a letter to its coaches on the topic of child protection safeguards. The letter will be of interest to parents and club officers and other nonathlete members as well. Follow this link for a copy of the letter. USA Swimming also announced a 7-step action plan on the subject of child protection.
Travel assistance for summer national meets -- Pacific's Board of Directors has approved travel assistance amounts for this summer's national championship meets.

For athletes who swim at Conoco Phillips National Championships or Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine in August, the determined airfare for the meet is $150 from Bay Area airports and $245 from Reno. For Open Water nationals in Long Beach in June, the determined airfare is $150 except for swimmers flying from Reno, in which case it is $235.

The total travel assistance package for these meets is the amount of the determined airfare above plus a $200 stipend.

These awards are subject to any adjustments required under Section 9 of Pacific's rules and regulations, which deals with the topic of travel assistance.

Travel assistance for coaches is the amount of the determined airfare.

New rules coming for open water suits -- Swimsuit rules for open water suits were revised recently by USA Swimming to allow for more body coverage than is legal under current rules. The revised rule will take effect on June 1. Follow this link for details on the revised rule for open water suits.
No-show rule changes for timed finals events in age group meets -- Effective immediately, at age group timed finals meets there is no penalty if a swimmer misses an event for which s/he has checked in.

The new no-penalty no-show rule does not apply for trials heats in age group trials and finals meets such as Junior Olympics or Far Westerns. In those meets, swimmers who miss an event in trials for which they've checked in will be scratched from their next individual event in the meet.

Swimsuits update -- USA Swimming has clarified its reference list of allowable swimsuits that are acceptable under its recently revised Rules and Regulations which deal with swimsuits approved for use in competition. The latest update was issued Jan. 25 and is specially relevant to swimmers intending to compete in USA Swimming national championship meets later this year.

For background, the September 21 letter to all members of USA Swimming from Bruce Stratton, the chairman of the USA Swimming Rules and Regulations Committee, spells out the changes to the swimsuit rules.
