July 12, 2020 - Pacific Swimming Announces the Passing of Ben Swiggett, Gary Hinderliter, and Judith Szmidt

Ben Swiggett, long-time official, Masters Swimmer and club volunteer, passed away on July 11, 2020. He suffered a medical emergency during a bike ride and never recovered, despite receiving medical attention at the scene and the hospital. Our condolences go out to the entire Swiggett family.

Many old time Zone One South and Pacific Swimming members and officials will be saddened to learn that long-time official Gary Hinderliter has passed away on June 29, 2020, in Florida. He was set to finally fully retire June 30. Gary was a supportive member of San Jose Aquatics and was an active Pacific Swimming official working many volunteer hours in Zone One South and LSC meets in Pacific. Gary is survived by his wife Mary Lou, daughters Gretchen and Jamie and son Garry. Condolences may be sent to: PO Box 554, McIntosh, FL 32664

Judith Szmidt passed away on March 31, 2020. She and her husband Adam (who passed away in 2000) were beloved members of our swimming officials' community. They dedicated their lives to service and were both incredible examples of USA and Pacific Swimming volunteerism. Judith received the Phillips Petroleum Volunteer of the Year Award in 1988 for her work with United States Swimming. In 1994 she was named Woman of the Year by Women in Swimming.

Our organization is forever grateful for their devotion and support.
