May 12, 2026 - New Background Check Process and Provider Effective May 14, 1026

Effective May 14, 2026, USA Swimming will transition to a new background screening provider, National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI).

Why We're Making This Change

After a comprehensive review of our screening needs and the increasing complexity of state and federal requirements, we selected NCSI because of their proven leadership in the youth sports space and their ability to deliver a white-glove experience.

Why NSCI

Trusted Leader in Sports Safety
NCSI is the leading background screening provider for the Olympic and youth sports community. They are the official background screening provider for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and more than 50 Affiliated National Governing Bodies rely on NCSI as their trusted partner to help protect athletes, members, and organizations.

State-Specific Expertise
NCSI specializes in the unique screening requirements of sports organizations and provides expert guidance on state-specific regulations, evolving legislation, and industry best practices.

NCSI helps ensure programs remain compliant, consistent, and aligned with the highest safety standards.

Safety, Accuracy, and Service Excellence

  • NCSI is known for delivering a high-quality experience for both organizations and members with:
  • Faster turnaround times on background screens.
  • Applicant Portal – Member is able to check their progress of the background screen and chat live with the NCSI Support Team.

How This Impacts Clubs and Members

With this transition, the overall price of background screenings will increase. This is not a decision we take lightly. Our priority was to select a partner who would strengthen our safety program while improving the experience for our clubs and members.

While the base screening cost is higher, this change addresses several areas that have been ongoing challenges and delivers meaningful improvements, including:

  • Faster and more reliable turnaround times.
  • State-level Office of Court Administration fees are included in the base price.
  • Improved processing for international searches.
  • Stronger guidance on state-specific compliance requirements.
  • Hands-on customer service from a dedicated support team.
  • Member applicant portal with status tracking and live chat support.

Impact

Initial background checks will decrease from $38 to $30, while renewal screens will increase from $18 to $30.
